Tattoo Placement: What Your Ink Says About You

These days, everyone and their mother is getting tattooed. From high school dropouts to yuppyrific Ivy Leaguers, tattoos have become somewhat of a mainstream social accessory.

Largely due to this surge in skin-art, the overall criticism of tattoos in general has shifted to the categorization and often stereotypical judgment surrounding the placement of a tattoo. It’s not just about getting a tattoo anymore, but rather where you put it.

It has been said that the placement of a tattoo plays a large part in the auto-gauging of one’s personality. Sadly, there are tat enthusiasts among us who hit the ink spike without putting too much thought into the location—and are now regretting that decision. To prevent yet another misplaced tattoo, here are some of the most common conceptions associated with tattoo placement, and a few tips for how getting tattooed on a certain area of the body can pigeon-hole you as a bird of a certain feather.

On the breast: Generally speaking, a tattoo on the breast area indicates a complete devotion to that subject, as these tattoos are located literally above the heart. Tattoos on the breast usually tend to be names or pictures of loved ones. Unless these names or pictures are of blood relatives, or of some undying connection, placing a tattoo here is usually a mistake. You might really love frogs…but, pick another area.

On the ankle: Although this is considered the most innocent place to put a tattoo, it is often considered the weakest, given a cover-up is only a Bobby sock away. Girls, if you want to put a tattoo on your ankle, ask yourself: do you really even want one, or are you feeling non-committal about your decision? And guys, if you want an ankle tattoo, you have a lot of questions to ask yourself.

On the lower back: Ah, the infamous tramp-stamp. Especially for women, this location has turned into a major trend. However, this spot is now considered highly unoriginal, and the image of “tramp-stamp = slut” doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon.

On the neck: This is a risky place to get a tattoo. Although this area is quickly gaining momentum as the hot spot among the young and edgy to get sticked, the problem is the future ability to cover this tattoo up.Depending on your choice of career, think twice about this area. We can’t all be rock stars.

On the groin: This location is tricky because it might involve some issues with sexual intimacy, and you could be subjecting yourself to a nice little reputation around town. Plus, every time you want to admire and appreciate your tattoo, you will always have to take down your pants and stare at your junk.

But, if you are confident with yourself and your tattoo decision, regardless if it is placed on your breast, crotch, or between your eyes, then ink away. After all, the tattoo will always be unique to you.
