It’s commonly known that getting a tattoo hurts. Your skin is being pricked repeatedly with a needle, and you’re not allowed to move. That alone is enough for some to consider getting a tattoo as tantamount to torture. For others with a considerably high-level of pain tolerance, the deed may just be a simple discomfort.
Though the level of pain depends on the individual pain threshold, there are specific areas of the body where getting a tattoo proves to be incredibly more painful than other body parts. The rule of thumb is that areas where there is a dense concentration of nerves, or there is no layer of fat between the skin and bone, are the most painful locations for tattoos.
From eyeballs to ankles, here are some sensitive body parts you should be aware of when designing your tattoo.
Lips
Though getting a lip tattoo is usually for cosmetic reasons (permanent cherry red lips for instance), others may opt for more extreme lip art. Given the presence of several nerves on the lips, it is obvious that every prick of the needle would be quite excruciating.
Eyeball
Eyeball tattoos may be the next era of tattoo design innovation, but they still haven’t discovered a remedy for the pain. Yikes.
Top of the ankle or foot
The absence of fat on the foot makes getting an ankle tattoo really painful. But this doesn’t stop most women in the world from getting a tat on this particular area.
Rib cage
This is definitely a painful treat, considering the bag of bones and thin layer of skin. But, all rib cage tattoos are sure to win some cool points for aesthetic appeal.
Behind the ear
There are many sensitive nerves behind the ear, and the fact that there is no fat layer between skin and bone adds the burden you’ll have to bear.
The Pubic area
Everyone has plenty of pleasure nerves in this area, so naturally, every sensation gets heightened, including pain. The resulting tattoo would most likely look sexy in this particular spot.
The genitals

If there are eyeball tattoos, then it wouldn’t be too surprising to know that there are also genital tattoos. Some people do get inked in their genital area. Penile tattoos do not necessarily require the organ to be erect during the procedure, but there are clients who prefer getting a tat with a woodie. As for women, there is an account of an inner labia tattoo, but this is highly uncommon.
